October in Colour: Market Days, Poppies & Statement Jewellery

A little look back at October

I’ve been looking through the photos on my phone to remind myself what I’ve been up to during October. It’s funny how quickly the weeks fly by when you’re busy making things, meeting people and saying yes to lovely opportunities. Seeing those photos again has been a welcome reminder of just how much has happened — and how grateful I am for every chance to share my work.

One of the highlights was being able to use my lovely friend Karen’s unit in Shrewsbury Market while she was away sunning herself. I’m always so thankful to have a place to sell my own art and jewellery. There’s something special about seeing your work out in the world, ready to be discovered by someone who might just fall in love with it. Thank you, Karen, for trusting me with your space!

Art, cards & a bit of publicity

I also took part in an exhibition at Bear Steps as part of the Shrewsbury Arts Society. I didn’t sell any original artworks this time, but I did sell a few cards, which was lovely. Not every event brings a big sale and that’s okay (this year has been slow for most artists). It’s still a valuable opportunity to show people what I do, meet fellow art lovers and help more people become familiar with my work. You never know where a little bit of good publicity might lead.

My art is now also in Soul Living (Castle Street, Shrewsbury) - the connection happened totally organically when I got chatting to Elisa and then later met Laura - which proves that sometimes you should just trust the universe. I was over the moon when they asked me to bring in artwork and prints to sell in their beautiful shop. The only downside is it's costing me a fortune as I buy something every time I nip in!

These experiences remind me that being an artist isn’t only about making a piece and waiting for it to sell. It’s also about putting yourself out there, trying different things and enjoying the connections along the way. I’m learning to appreciate those smaller wins just as much as the big ones.

Painting poppies for November

There’s been plenty of painting going on, too. The Groundskeeper Café asked me to create a poppy-themed display for November and I absolutely loved the experience. Having a theme to work with gave me a starting point, while still leaving room to explore and make the pieces my own.

I managed to create some variation within the display, which is something I really enjoy. It’s satisfying to see how one idea can take different shapes, colours and moods. Working on a project like this is a lovely reminder that making art for a particular space or occasion can be just as inspiring as following an idea that arrives out of nowhere.

A new range finding its feet

My new passion project, the revamped and reloved range, is well underway — and it’s proving popular! I’ve been having such a good time making these statement pieces and giving them a fresh lease of life. The best part is seeing them find new homes.

They don’t tend to hang around for long once they see the light of day, which is amazing. Every sale is a little affirmation that people connect with what I’m creating and that encouragement is exactly what I need to keep going. I’m excited to see where this range takes me next.

Feeling thankful & looking ahead

So, October was full of shared spaces, exhibitions, café painting and new creative energy. I’m grateful to Karen Duffy, Soul Living, the Groundskeeper Café and everyone who has taken the time to look at, enjoy or buy something I’ve made. These opportunities all add something different to my creative journey.

Now I’m looking ahead to what comes next, with a camera roll full of reminders that good things are happening — sometimes in small steps, sometimes in statement-sized pieces and often when you least expect them.
